Concept analysis is the means of deducing and developing clarity through the study of concepts used in modern science (McEwen & Wills, 2011, p. 51). Concepts refer to occurrences that happen in the environment as well as thoughts. Concept analysis is the engagement in finding the meaning of concepts for the purpose of enhancing understanding. The process of analysis entails the use of methodologies that clarify, recognize and define certain concepts. It is useful in forming a base where nurses can develop conceptual frameworks for carrying out research (McEwen & Wills, 2011, p. 52). Various methods have been developed to carry out concept analysis. This paper aims at studying how Weathers, McCarthy, and Coffey (2015) expound on the concept of spirituality by applying Rodger’s postulate of the evolutionary method.
According to McEwen and Wills (2011), the evolutionary method was first published by Roger in 1989. The characteristic nature of concepts transferring logic value, being active, and dependent on each other justifies the use of the method in the review. Roger’s methodology develops a concept analysis by investigating changes that occur with the aim of establishing a distinct and applicable meaning. The changes observed are mainly in the requirements, and objectives that continuously refine and cause variations in concepts. The evolutionary method is a means of concept analysis that employs a synchronized task approach that can involve tasks ongoing at the same time, rather than a development of one task after the other (McEwen & Wills, 2011, p. 56). Weathers, McCarthy, and Coffey (2015) review that a concept in the evolutional approach becomes associated with a specific group of attributes that result in an interpretation of the concept due to socialization and continuous public relations. The Rodger’s evolutionary method takes into account various steps where the researcher is interactively involved with nature in back and forth movements between the phases and activities that happen concurrently (Weathers, McCarthy, & Coffey, 2015).
Steps of the Process and the Results of each Step
Identify the concept and associated terms (McEwen & Wills, 2011).
McEwen and Wills (2011), review show that this is the first postulate in the Rodger’s methodology. Weathers, McCarthy, and Coffey (2015) recognized that concept analysis in spirituality in the past was mainly researched with little or no consideration to the use of empirical literature. The authors aimed to clarify the notion of spirituality in nursing for future research work using the Rodgers’ evolutionary framework to carry out reviews of theory and empirical literature that focus on spirituality. According to Weathers, McCarthy, and Coffey (2015), application of the evolutionary approach is widely acknowledged by scholars because it uses a logical means of investigations into published research works for the purpose of identifying elements, qualifications, and the significance of the research in developing content about a concept.
Select an appropriate realm for data collection (McEwen & Wills, 2011).
Weathers, McCarthy, and Coffey (2015) carried out a comprehensive research on electronic databases such as CINAH, MEDLINE, Psychinfo, and SocIndex. The sources were used to provide information about nursing and health-related literature, nursing and medical disciplines, psychology and social work respectively. The results of this phase were limited to publications made in a period of 11 years between 2002 and 2013 due to the increased research on the topic at that duration. Therefore, information from this period was deemed recent and relevant, and it integrated prior knowledge from the past……
