Assessments 3 and 4:

Assessments 3 and 4 are based on the same chosen case study from your clinical practice, so you should read the assessment questions for both before you begin. Assessment 3 introduces your chosen patient and their experience of pain, and is focused on the pain assessment process, while assessment 4 focuses on the pain management strategies used, and the efficacy of the pain management plan.

Assessment 3:  Case analysis: part A

Having read Themes 2 and 3 of this subject you should have a good understanding of pain physiology, multidimensional pain assessment tools, and the complexities associated with performing a holistic pain assessment in infants and children.

The purpose of this assessment is to give you the opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of the subject content using a case study from your paediatric nursing practice to integrate theory into practice.

For this assessment, you will select an infant or child from your clinical area who is experiencing pain,  you are then required to choose a pain assessment tool appropriate to your chosen case study, and perform a pain assessment.

You will then discuss this in your case analysis by addressing the following points:

  • introduce your patient, their diagnosis and relevant history
  • describe the type of pain experienced by your patient and discuss the biopsychosocial factors which may be influencing your patient’s experience of pain
  • justify the appropriateness of the pain assessment tool you have chosen, against the parameters; comprehensive, and age and developmentally appropriate
  • interpret and present an analysis of the findings of the pain assessment
  • finally, outline the potential consequences of unrelieved pain in infants and children

Confidentiality

It is important to obtain patient consent and maintain patient confidentiality. In your written submission you should provide a script of what you said to the parent/guardian when asking for their consent.

Now that you have completed Themes 4 and 5 of this subject you will have improved your knowledge and understanding of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of pain and distress in infants and children.

The purpose of Assessment 4 is to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to integrate theory into practice by using the pain assessment information from your chosen case study (from Assessment 3) to guide your discussion of holistic pain management for this patient.  

In this assessment, you are asked to both outline and critique the actual pain management strategies utilised in your chosen case study, and recommend potential alternative pain management strategies that you would recommend as appropriate based on your analysis of the pain assessment information/results from Assessment 3.

 Your discussion should include:

  •  
    • a brief overview of the case presented in assessment 3, their condition, type of pain and the pain assessment tool that was used
    • a discussion of the biopsychosocial factors which influenced your patient’s experience of pain
    • a critique of the pharmacological management utilised in the treatment of your patient,  comparing to the recommendations in current literature/evidence based guidelines
    • a rationalisation of the actual or potential non-pharmacological management of your patient’s pain,  based on your  analysis of the pain assessment results
    • an evaluation of the patient responses to both the pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management strategies utilised in your chosen patient. Compare to contemporary literature/evidence-based practice guidelines
    • a reflection of your own beliefs and values in relation to assessment and management of pain in children – discuss how these may have impacted on your nursing management of this patient
    • an overview of the supportive measures you used for the family of the infant/child in pain
