2. Explain at least three specific examples of the use of foreshadowing in the short story “Young Goodman Brown” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Be sure to explain what event is being foreshadowed.
3. Emerson, as a transcendentalist, believed in the “indwelling of the presences of the divinity in all things at all times” (590). This philosophy was in direct contrast to Puritanism apparent in Hawthorne’s theme of man’s sinful nature as seen in “The Minister’s Black Veil.” Provide specific examples from the two works that highlight the differences in these two philosophies.

Foreshadowing in Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Foreshadowing refers to the warnings in advance about events that are likely to happen in the future. In literary readings, foreshadowing is commonly used in alerting readers of the events that are likely to happen in the future. Mainly, literature uses foreshadowing to warn the readers of an impending danger that is likely to take place in the future. The use of foreshadowing commonly appears at the beginning of a chapter or a book in literature to help the readers in developing expectations in the coming events of the story.
An example of literary works that makes use of foreshadowing is the Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story discusses a young man Brown, who leaves his wife of three months called Faith at home to go on an errand to meet with an old gentleman who is actually the evil (Hawthorne 7). The first instance of foreshadowing in the story are the words of Faith to her husband as he leaves for the forest, where the Puritans believe that the devil lives. Faith tells her husband that all should be well with him when he comes back. Faith, being a Puritan, understands the danger associated with the errand that the husband is undertaking and rays that all may be well with him when he comes back from the errand. This was not to be as when Goodman Brown returned home from the forest, he loses faith even in his wife and becomes suspicious with everyone around him…
