STEM is an acronym for the field of study and carriers related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. There has been a general concern on the disparity between the numbers of males and females in this field with the former outnumbering the later. Some scholars hold the opinion that it is a pipeline issue – meaning that if we can interest more young females in STEM subjects and disciplines, the issue will be resolved over time.
Due its argumentative and statistical nature, many scholars have researched on this topic. Kiefer& Sekaquaptewa (2007) argue that women have decided to forgo STEM careers to achieve good work-family balance. This notion portends that it is women’s decision to do so and there is no biasness against them. However, the evidence for this argument is not substantial. A certain study in 2012 that was randomized and double blinded gave faculty of science in universities that are research-intensive application materials of a fictitious student randomly assigned a female or male name. It found that both female and male faculty placed the male applicant as the most hirable and competent compared to a female applicant with same materials of application.
Reuben et al., (2014) state that bias is not a personal choice or pipeline issue. They state that it rejects females out of science. They further find out that bias plays out in different ways depending on ethnicity and race. They carried an interview with 60 female scientists and a survey with 557 scientists (female).
