Introduction

            Leadership provides a critical element in every institution. It provides guidance, motivation and a sense of cohesion to the individuals in a given organization. In a constantly changing corporate and professional world, the need for leadership skills cannot be overstated. Essentially, leadership constitutes the determining factor for the success of any organization. Thus, an organization that is structured with poor leadership is bound to fail in the long run. Alternatively, an organization that is made up of skilled and effective leaders is likely to succeed.

Self-Awareness, Leadership Values & Strengths

            I have made it a priority in my life to integrate leadership skills. The leadership skills I possess are a culmination of my desire to reinforce professionalism and character in my career. I realize that my success in life is predicated on how well I am able to engage with others in the society. Similarly, it is dependent on my ability to engage critical thinking in the face of challenges that may hinder professional progress and development. Consequently, I strived to acquire several skills that have hitherto played a significant role in aiding my assent both within my relationships and in the career field. First, I strive to understand who I am, where I am going as well as my priorities. This is an aspect of leadership that is known as self-awareness. Self-awareness entails the ability to define oneself by establishing one’s strengths, weaknesses, motivation, beliefs and values in life. It provides a lens through which the society defines us. The need for self-awareness cannot be overemphasized in leadership. For instance, in order to ascend the ladders of success, I first had to acknowledge the challenges, and the inherent disadvantages, that would beleaguer my potential as a member of the Colombian community in the US. I wanted to be different from my peers. The first element of self-awareness that I had to integrate entailed the understanding that I had the power to change my future. Self-awareness gives us the opportunity to define who we are. It further eases integration in the community as it enables one to overlook social prejudices, which may prove to be limiting in the long run. My self-awareness provides clarity in life. I am able to avoid emotions that are impeding and engage attitudes that serve to propel my dreams. Self-awareness is pivotal in the promotion of one’s talent, skill and professionalism.

As guiding lights, I integrated responsibility, respect and honesty in my daily engagements. Early on in life, I was made to understand that I was solely responsible for the outcomes I got in life. Consequently, I had to take charge of every situation or challenge that threatened to hinder my potential. Being responsible entails committing to one’s duties. It further involves the ability to remain accountable for one’s actions regardless of the outcomes. Responsibility has a direct influence on how well one oversees their tasks. For instance, an individual who is not responsible is less likely to exert themselves beyond what is expected of them. A sense of responsibility further inspires respect for institutional mechanics. Thus, respect provides another core value in my life. The need for respect in leadership is pervasive. As a soccer team captain both in high school and the early years of college education, I came to understand that respect in leadership provides a critical element. By respecting another individual in the society, one provides a medium through which they can be respected in turn. Thus, I have always respected my parents, educators, peers and others, since I expect to be extended similar respect. Respect is an acknowledgement of the significance of the alternate party. Lastly, I am honest. As an honest individual, I have always made it my goal to tell the truth regardless of the prevailing circumstances. These three values guide my life and have been pivotal in propelling me towards a better future both for myself and my family.

Meaningful Relationships in Leadership

A leader should also be able to create a strong network of people around them. I use the three core principles of honesty, respect and responsibility to endear myself to the individuals that form a part of my social and professional network. A support team provides both the emotional and operational support that is required in the execution of duties and tasks. In building support teams, I incline myself to parties who reflect similar values in their engagements. Subsequently, I am honest with the people who surround me. I tell them the truth and allow them to make decisions, which are predicated on their personal beliefs without the impositions of duty. This initiative is a reflection of my relationship goals which entails the creation of an open and consultative support team. I further respect all the individuals that surround me. I do not believe in making people follow me out of obedience or a response to a blind sense of loyalty. I want my followers to be people who appreciate their roles in the unit, and further believe in my leadership.

Principally, their belief in me will largely be inspired by the belief that I extend to them with regards to their efforts and duties. In endearing myself to the individuals who form part of my professional team, I engage four predominant metrics. These constitute constancy, congruity, reliability and integrity. I apply the same metrics in my personal relationships. At the moment, the most important relationship in my life constitutes the relations that I have with my family. Through my personal relationship with my family, I wish to convey the essence with which I regard my support team and the forms of relationship that I wish to have with everybody that I interact with in my professional life.

Leading with Purpose

            In leading my team, I always communicate the goals and objectives that we hope to achieve from our efforts. Essentially, the initiative inspires a sense of cohesion and loyalty among the team members. Similarly, leading with purpose ensures that each member is aware of the role that they play in the overall team effort and the need for commitment in attaining collective goals. Leading with purpose further reflects on my ability to stay committed to the pre-established goals of the team. It mirrors my belief in the abilities of my team. It further alludes to the essence of the efforts that we extend to our projects in attaining the overall goals of the entire team. I further empower other members to overcome their challenges through reflection and dialogues. The initiative provides an opportunity by which the members of the team can reflect on their personal lives and settle upon decisions that are productive in the long run.

My Personal Leadership Development Plan

            My personal leadership development plan will entail 12 key elements. They include; intellectual development, my motivations, personal discipline and stress management, personal reflections, leadership values, principles and ethical boundaries, my motivated capabilities, building relationships, leadership styles, leadership development and leadership purpose and legacy. First, with regards to intellectual development, I will seek to broaden my knowledge on leadership in the military organization by reading books that explore the intricacies of leadership. I will also study military camps to establish the nature of the relationships that prevail in the setting and how these can be bettered. Secondly, the personal discipline initiatives will include eating more vegetables as well as registering in gyms for physical exercises.

Additionally, I will use timers and alarms to regulate my sleeping patterns. Additionally, I will incline myself towards honesty, responsibility and respect in the execution of my responsibilities as well as in my relationships. Some of the principles that I will base my leadership on include self-awareness, constancy, and team building. These initiatives will significantly aid in the cohesion of the team. My ethical decisions will always be predicated on the utilitarian framework. Principally, I will engage decisions that have a benefit for the majority of the people. My main motivational drive will constitute the need for personal development and growth through team building and maintenance. In order to be reflective, I will strive to expose myself to counsel from other members of the team and further seek the advice of my superiors.

            Currently, the most important people in my life include my wife, my children and my extended family. These are the people that I turn to when I am distressed. My mentor in life constitutes my mother. My professional network is made up of fellow employees, military personnel as well as electrical engineers. In order to integrate my personal and professional relationships, I will engage honesty, respect and responsibility. I prefer the democratic style of leadership, which involves deliberation with the team members before settling for particular decisions. Through my efforts, I hope to leave behind a legacy that is wrapped in honesty and diligence.
