Introduction

A learning organization refers to an organization that innovates rapidly and obtains enough knowledge to thrive and survive in a fast evolving business environment. Learning organizations tend to value and recognize employee contributions. Furthermore, they initiate a culture that supports and inspire the employees to learn. Additionally, such organizations encourage risk-taking, continuous improvement, and creative thinking with regard to new ideas. They remain characterized by collective working and traditional barriers breakdown with the aim of releasing the employee’s creative potential (Roper & Pettit, 2002). The element of self–improvement also exists in learning organizations; individuals become involved not only in the quest for a job-related type of knowledge but also in self-knowledge.

Toyota

Toyota, the world’s biggest manufacturer, has remained successful due to its principle of becoming a learning organization. The ability of Toyota to pinpoint the root causes and create countermeasures makes it a good learning organization. Identification of the root problems expands the knowledge base of individuals and increases creative thinking (Cors, 2003). Moreover, Toyota incorporates responsibility, organizational learning, and self-reflection in its operations. The above concepts enable the corporation to reflect on weaknesses and innovate improvement methods. Finally, the company cascades the objectives and goals from the top down to the workgroup level in a process known as hoshin kanri.

The most aggressive objectives begin at the top, and each level identifies objectives to support the company’s goals. The company also ensures that the objectives remain concrete and measurable, and they promote the goals of the enterprise (Ichijo & Kohlbacher, 2007). Through the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) policy acquired by Toyota, success becomes monitored and measured on a regular basis. The hoshin kanri policy also encourages individual participation. Toyota recognizes and improves employee morale through various awards. Therefore, the enterprise succeeds as a learning organization because it relentlessly pursues success rather than trends with little or no results.
