Abstract

The research seeks to enhance the understanding of the concept of organizational behavior (OB), and its importance in an organizational setup. It is noted that OB is a study on individual’s behaviors and how they interact with the activities within an organization. OB plays a crucial role in determining the success of an organization, considering that it seeks to bring together differences in behaviors towards the achievement of common organizational goals. I can achieve an optimal understanding of the subject by understanding the language of OB, possible through an analysis of its practical applications. Since the process involves learning, then it is important that I evaluate myself to determine the kind of learner I am and in return determine the best choice of learning technique towards understanding OB. Various research techniques can be employed towards the better understanding of OB. However, surveys are the commonly used techniques towards learning OB. The technique involves asking individuals to respond to a number of questions and the results analyzed. Like any other management approach, OB is faced with several challenges that include ethical needs and the lack of employee engagement. However, the rising use of technology provides numerous opportunities by promoting communication within the organization, an aspect that is essential towards achieving success.

Concepts and Theories of Organizational Behavior

OB refers to the study of people’s behaviors in a working environment, and how the human character interacts with the operations of the organization (Bauer & Erdogan, 2012). It has been noted that OB is an applied discipline that uses knowledge about people, and how an organizational structure affects their overall behavior towards attaining the productivity of the particular organization. Since employees within an organization are characterized by differences in cultures and behaviors, it is important that the overall OB is understood to enhance its integration towards achieving the desired objectives. OB is thereby an important aspect in achieving successful operations within an organization. Combined behaviors provide a conducive climate that emphasizes on the achievement of desired goals. Since all members of staff, starting from the gatekeeper through to the CEO have a role to play in the organization, achievement of a positive internal environment through the management of organizational behavior exhibits a stronger external manifestation (Bauer & Erdogan, 2012). Employee motivation and company culture are the common elements towards practicing organizational behavior; this is due to the shift by most organizations towards teamwork as a means of solving issues.

In order to optimize the understanding of organizational behavior, it is important that I get to learn the core derivatives of OB as applied in practical environments. If I desire to get a better understanding of the course, it will be important that I ignore the urge to make assumptions on the simplicity of the subject and systematically rule out the available explanations on the same and in the end, understand how individual behaviors integrates with organizational behaviors towards achieving common goals (Baijumon, 2015). However, since the achievement of skills involves learning, then it is important that I understand my personal capabilities, and in return determines the best learning approach that is coherent with my abilities. It will be unjustifiable to just pick a learning technique like using visuals just because it exists yet my capabilities fit well with the auditory approach. Since I always lose concentration as the learning sessions become longer, it is important that I take breaks between sessions, and always take notes so as to maintain attentiveness during learning sessions as in the case of kinesthetic learners. On the other hand, I believe visuals simplify many wordings that exist in passages, hence easing understanding, and considering that, I will need to integrate visuals into my learning.

Successful OB research involves numerous tools that aid in the discovery of how people and organizations behave. The core approach towards understanding a particular subject is by setting a research question and seeking to find suitable answers to the same. Research can be undertaken through various means that include surveys, field studies, case studies, laboratory studies, and Meta-analysis (Bauer & Erdogan, 2012). Of the various methods, surveys are the commonly used towards successful learning. Surveys involve engaging various respondents who would be required to answer either oral or written questions that seek to answer the research question. Information technology has eased the undertaking of surveys as it is possible to engage many respondents at a time via online platforms which also analyze the obtained data and provide results with ease. Experimental approaches can also be employed towards finding answers to the research question by comparing variables assigned to the study groups with those assigned to the control groups.

The current challenges of OB include ethical challenges and the lack of employee engagement. As organizations endeavor to adhere to the ethical principles, day to day operations are compromised as ethical requirements create a more rigid working environment that hinders the adoption of organizational behavior as a means towards achieving success. Motivation in organizations is the core driver for achieving both individual and team productivity. It has been noted that employees who are not motivated towards their duties lack the engagement towards furthering the organization’s interest. Technological advancements have greatly contributed to the improvement of organizational behavior by facilitating effective communication channels, which is considered as an opportunity. Technology has enhanced the way people communicate within and outside the organization (Bauer & Erdogan, 2012). Since communication is the core driver of business success, effective management implies that the challenges that affect OB are overcome easily.

In conclusion, OB is a study of people’s behaviors within a working environment and how the behaviors interact with the general operations of the organization. OB is important in an organization as it determines the motivation of employees towards the achievement of company goals. Combined behaviors through team management determine the success of an organization. Although OB is common in most organizations, various challenges hinder its contributions towards success. Ethical challenges and the lack of employee engagement are the common challenges. However, the adoption of technology by most organizations has created opportunities for enhancing communication within and outside the organization, thus promoting the integration of behaviors towards success.
