Topic:         Developing People Skills:  Personal reflection on insights from organisational behaviour

Question: “Organisational behaviour investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structure     have on behaviour within an organisation, and it applies that knowledge to make organisations work more effectively” (Robbins, 2016:30).

Consider the above statement from Robbins (2016) and write a reflective essay on three concepts within the study of organisational behaviour that have been of most interest to you. Your essay should briefly outline the three concepts, but mostly reflect on why they are of special interest to you and how you have used or plan to use them to help make organisations more productive and satisfying places for yourself and other organisational members.

  1. It is recommended you work on this task consistently throughout the semester.
  2. The UC examination period is May 16-28, 2016 (TBC). This assignment is due May 15. Please plan your work and study schedules accordingly.
  3. Assignment 2 is due April 28 (9pm). In accordance with UC policy, teaching staff aim for a turnaround time of 15 working days; students should be able to undertake assignment three regardless of feedback on assignment two.

Introduction

Organizational behavior deals with the investigation of how the structures within an organization influences the behavior within workplaces. It is a complement of human resource and organizational theory that emphasizes on intra-organizational and organizational facets such as motivation, power, and communication between organization’s dynamics (Bauer & Erdogan, 2013). The choice to explore on the three facets; communication, power and motivation is because they are among the primary factors that affect the daily organization business. The three topics are of interest as they make a significant contribution towards improving organizational performance and contributes to the enhancement of group or individual commitment, satisfaction, and performance. Each of the three OB facets will be explored with a view of outlining their application in shaping productivity and satisfaction in an organization.

Motivation

It is described as the aspiration by a group of people or an individual, normally the employees, to attain a certain objectives or performance level. It is the yardstick for obtaining a goal-directed behavior within an organization. With regards to organizational behavior, the psychological aspects of motivation that are known to be the core aspects of stimulating behavior of an individual or a team within an organization, include job satisfaction, recognition, zeal for money, success and teamwork. As suggested by Graham (2014), they are the key stimulants of motivation. Motivation is an aspect of interest and importance for managers of an organization, since they get work done through the workers efficiently. A motivated workforce leads to improved productivity. As indicated by Locke’s goal setting hypothesis, the motivation process is comprised of three basic stages that have to be followed to achieve a motivated workforce. The first phase is the drive or the need to have the workforce motivated. The second stage entails the stimulus around which the drive or needs must be aroused to achieve motivation. The last step is the phase that explains the maintenance of the motivation among a group of individuals and is characterized by the satisfaction of the needs and when the goals have to be accomplished.  The application of the concept in the context of OB is through understanding the factors that motivate the employees. As suggested by Maslow, the application of the concept of motivation can be through self-actualization, social, esteem, safety and physiological needs of the employees. The physiological needs that can arouse motivation include fair pay and improving the working environment, esteem needs revolves around status responsibility and reputation. Self-actualization can be achieved through offering an individual the chance for professional growth. Motivation is significant for both consumer and employee performance, through improving employee productivity, decreasing absenteeism and job satisfaction.
