B.        Specific Leadership Behaviors

1.         Look at Transformational Leadership handout, The Leadership Challenge, and handouts related to management and characteristics that make a company great.

2.         Look at your swot analysis and see if your strengths and opportunities

might relate to what your leadership behaviors might be.

3.         Discuss your role as a leader is in providing a vision for the program, management of the program, addressing the political aspects of the program, and building a constituency to support your efforts.

4.         Discuss what you will do during you r career to become what you have described as the leader you want to be

C.        Importance to public health/others

1.         What do you think are the important outcomes if you are successful in terms of public health (ie. People/communities are healthier, happier, major public health threats will be diminished.

2.         If you develop the values and characteristics of the leader you want to be, will it also relate to other things such as how you build your social environment, familv life, etc.

Through identification and sustained assessment of my leadership skills in different contexts of work and interactions, I have realized my personal orientation and ability as a leader. Subsequently, I am developing qualities and strengths that will make me an effective leader in order to grow and become a productive person within the organizational setting and to the society at large. Through various experiences and insights from literature, I have realized that I want to be a servant leader. My leadership potential across various domains is that of engaging and contributing to the success of the team through direct participation and collaboration with the subordinates. Am now determined to improve on my talents, skills, and experiences in servant leadership through research and reflection. I have taken much time to try and understand various leadership styles, traits, philosophies, and best practices that should be used in different situations. The knowledge that I have gained in these ventures make me feel confident that the most effective approach is to engage as a servant, where I keep the interest of the organization and the people before my personal interests (Caldwell, 2012). Additionally, having a personal approach towards leadership has enabled me to chart a course forward in my career objectives, with the aim of achieving my greatest potential in leadership. In this light, learning, resilience, communication, humbleness, and commitment have become some of the most important values as a leader (Clarke, 2011). Being a servant entails engaging directly with the subordinates, which requires one to have an understanding that there are different personalities and there is a need for effective communication.

The characteristics that define servant leadership are in line with my moral and ethical beliefs (Avolio, Walumbwa, & Weber, 2009; Greenleaf, 1977). These include engaging in situational leadership, where as a leader, I am supposed to support the subordinates in any way I can to ensure that the objectives are met. Other characteristics include:

Focus on the people. As a servant leader, I have an imperative role of setting a good example and being a person others can look up to for guidance and technical assistance. In this context, am motivated by goals, which are shared across the organization. I ensure that there is a sense of authentic worth and purpose to inspire others to contribute to the common goal.

Task oriented. With a keen focus on preventing occupational burnout and fatigue that can compromise my contribution to the teamwork, I ensure that there is effective planning, implementation, and execution of tasks. These decisions are made with the import of all stakeholders affected by the tasks at hand.
