Philosophy of Workforce Training

Pick any of the learning/developmental theories advanced by Knowles, Gardner, Gagne, Kolb, the Problem Based Learning or Institutional System design models. Explain what the model includes, why you selected this model as a framework for workforce improvement, how this model can be implemented, and any limitations this model may have. The continuous learning of an organization’s workforce is paramount to its success and the staff self-development. The ever-changing technologies with increasing globalization demand that people do not stop gaining new ideas. Employees need to attain new skills and knowledge and advance their expertise to ensure the maintenance of the company’s economic well-being and competitiveness. Many theories provide a guide on how adult training should be done to realize workplace learning. They offer either formal or informal means of educating the workforce (Bélanger, 2011). The Self-Directed Learning developed from the Malcolm Knowles’ Andragogy Theory is the best framework that an organization can adopt to help improve its workforce.

The Self-Directed Learning Model emphasizes that mature individuals have self-direction, identifiable purpose, and are responsible for any decisions they make. The theory holds that these aspects are critical when creating training programs for adults. Wang and Cranton (2012) discuss that educating adults can be efficient by focusing on the learner.  The philosophy explains that for an adult to grasp and retain new skills and knowledge, they need to comprehend the reasons for learning something. The model, hence dictates that information is given concerning why particular things are being taught. Additionally, they should be allowed to develop their learning goals and put into practice their individual concepts. The philosophy also discusses that the training should be task- or problem-oriented because this presents real situations that require solutions. Also, the learning process should consider adults’ abilities of self-direction and hence the need to allow them to discover and generate ideas by themselves while guiding them.
