Background Information

New Zealand lacks an official measure of poverty. Unlike countries like the USA, New Zealand lacks a set poverty line that can be formerly used to identify people in poverty. Consequently, some families live in deplorable conditions that are likely not to be noticed due to discrimination and stigma. Currently, about 28% of children in New Zealand live in poverty. Poverty is a social problem that results from insufficient income, bad economy, lack of education, as well as other factors. Children living is such conditions miss on basic human needs such as good shelter and adequate food (UNICEF, 2015). The challenges presented by poverty affect the children directly, as well as the wider community. The opportunities for children to grow and develop in a fair environment are limited. Notably, education is highly affected because children experience poverty-related stressors that induce student apathy or dropping out. Lack of education can result in increased poverty condition in the long-run by reducing productivity and earning ability of such individuals in future. Moreover, a lot of government funds are used to deal with aspects that are induced by poverty such as immorality and crime. Morris-Travers (2015) states that about forty thousand children admissions are made in New Zealand health centers due to social-economic related conditions. Some of these treatments are a repetition of previous conditions that come up due to lack of conducive environments for full recovery. The prevailing conditions call for measures that can be used to reduce poverty in the country. Fundamentally, mitigation by addressing issues affecting children can be beneficial because they are easy to implement and monitor through the education system.

Childrens’ Commissioner (2012) reports that researchers have confirmed that lack of enough food or food that contains adequate nutrients poses risks of complications in growth and development as well as health. The lack of a balanced diet contributes to particular health conditions. For instance, surveys around the country have shown increased rates of obesity due to high cholesterol intake (Childrens’ Commissioner, 2012). Children also miss out of school due to the lack of lack food for lunch. Others survive in school on breakfast because their parents cannot afford. Various programs have been developed to solve the challenge of poverty. The Childrens’ Commissioner (2012) recommends that the government should design and implement programs to feed children. A collaborative food-in-school initiative can be used to alleviate the barriers created by poverty in the education system. Most of the time kids go to school hungry or miss class because of hunger. Consequently, their performance is dismally affected. Childrens’ Commissioner (2012) reviews that a survey conducted in the country showed that 20.1 % of families that had school going children lacked enough food to facilitate active and healthy life. Additionally, it is evident that children in low-income households have a higher risk of having a higher cholesterol intake coupled with little healthy foodstuffs compared to their counterparts whose parents have a high income. Current programs that offer feeding services to poor kids include KidsCan, Fonterra, and Sanitarium (Childrens’ Commissioner, 2012).
