Servant Leadership

Servant leadership is an alternative approach to leadership where the leader’s purpose is to serve others. This leadership philosophy started in the 1970s and it stems from the leader being a servant to others first, and a leader second. It is a philosophy where the leader gains the respect and trust of others by putting their needs before his or hers. This leader motivates others through supporting them in achieving their goals.

Conduct research on Servant Leadership (Robert K. Greenleaf) and what it means to be a servant leader, and in a three- to four-page paper, complete the following:

 Discuss the relationship between servant leadership and ethical leadership.

 Discuss the relationship between servant leadership and moral intelligence.

Choose a leader whom you believe to be a true servant leader, and discuss why this person is a servant leader. Cite specific examples to support your belief.

 Analyze how servant leadership may affect your current organization if all leaders were to practice servant leadership as their dominant leadership style. Submit your answers in a three- to four-page Microsoft Word document.


Servant-leadership is an idea that first came into the limelight in 1970. The idea developed following Robert K. Greenleaf ‘s essay about The Servant as a Leaders (Spears, 2005). Greenleaf emphasizes that the best approach to leadership is by serving others (Spears, 2005).  Serving employees, clients, and the community should be the most critical priory a leader should have (Spears, 2005). Greenleaf’s idea is designed to increase service to other people within an organization, provide a holistic approach to work, creating the sense of a community in the workplace, and power sharing in decision making within an organization (Spears, 2005). Greenleaf views a servant-leader as a person who serves first before assuming the leadership mentality. In his article in 1970, Greenleaf wrote that the conscious that makes someone desire to lead is activated by the natural feeling of wanting to serve (Spears, 2005). The major characteristic of a servant-leader is ensuring that other people’s interests come first (Spears, 2005). This paper aims to review on Servant Leadership as stipulated by Robert K. Greenleaf in relation to ethical leadership and moral intelligence.

Relationship between Servant Leadership and Ethical Leadership

Ethical leadership focuses on empowering people within an organization to do the right thing, rather than laying focus on preventing them from doing the wrong thing (Mihelic, Lipicnik, & Tekavcic, 2010). According to Mihelic, Lipicnik, & Tekavcic (2010) an ethical leader is one who lives by the principles of conduct that are important in running the organization. Mihelic, Lipicnik, & Tekavcic (2010) states that ethical leadership involves an inquiry process where the leaders ask questions about the wrong and right things; and also a mode of conduct where the leader sets an example for the people he or she leads. Mihelic, Lipicnik, & Tekavcic (2010) review states that the mission of leadership is to serve and provide the service and the passion for leadership is developed from a concern.
