The literature review addresses the key elements of the research questions by conducting a qualitative review of literature. The literature review has three parts that include happiness, customer satisfaction, and company outcomes. Happiness is a key factor in the success of organizations. From a historical perspective, happiness has been extensively studied by philosophers such as Plato. The definition of happiness is influenced by various issues that include national and cultural aspects of an individual. Happiness is also a factor that is determined by issues that emerge in the organizational setting. In this light, organizational culture and the characteristics of the workforce play a critical role. Organizations that focus on maintaining values that promote happiness within the organization have shown high levels of success. Customer satisfaction has a positive correlation with the employee’s happiness. Ensuring that there is a conducive work environment promotes job satisfaction, which in turn leads to happiness. Job satisfaction is achieved when workers are offered positions where they can perform according to their skills and knowledge and they are provided with the right tools for the job. Other factors that contribute to customer satisfaction include training and development, which is in line with creating a productive work environment. When customers are served by happy workers, they are likely to be satisfied and communicate with others on the quality of service or products. The company outcomes are influenced by how workers engage in the workplace, their attitudes, and the capacities they possess. Where the employees are happy, they have the motive to work with what is available making happiness an imperative thing in organizations where there are constrained resources. Subsequently, the organization with happy workers can produce more with limited resources compared to those that do not maintain values and models that guarantee happiness. The literature review offers a compressive analysis of literature that correlates the information to identify the imperative factors that lead to happy employees and how the organization benefits from such initiatives.

2.1 Happiness  

The definition of happiness studied by the Greek philosophers started with Plato and defined happiness into two different approaches. The eudemonic approach is defined by the desire of doing well and admirably at something, and the result of doing well should bring happiness to the individual. The hedonic approach is defined by the relation between pleasure or living well and avoiding pain (Price, 2011).
