Incorporation and Analysis of Existing Resources

The increasing globalization of the world calls for more interaction among individuals of diverse backgrounds. Today, people do not work and live in an insular environment, as most are part of the global economy competing in an international framework (Alonso & Wang, 2014). Therefore, non-profits, as well as profit- making organizations, should be diversified to stay competitive. Capitalizing and maximizing workplace diversity is a key factor in management. Managers and supervisors need to identify ways they can ensure the workplace keeps abreast of social changes and technologies; thus, they should be able to overcome the challenges that are entailed in accommodating a multicultural working environment (Morgan, et al., 2014). This research evaluates the influence of cultural diversity on the performance of an organization’s team.

Since globalization has become an important factor in today’s market, it is important to consider cultural differences, especially when managing a team. The concept of intercultural management has been researched and adopted by companies around the world, to help build successful teams. The International Team Excellence Award (ITEA) criteria has been helpful to organizations, by providing them with a program of team recognition. As a result, over 1150 teams in 26 countries have participated in the annual cycles since 1985 (Anonymous, 2015). This process allows groups to submit their projects, which are evaluated by trained judges, who use the ITEA criteria to determine the performance of a team. The ITEA process has thus helped many organizations around the world improve their use of teams to address critical issues. According to Haring-Smith (2012), diversity entails accepting, understanding, and recognizing individual differences, despite class, race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical ability and spiritual practice. He also noted that every person is unique, but share various biological and environmental characteristics such as a need for food and water. Therefore diversity can be categorized across two social indices, the first being primary; such as gender, age and sexual orientation, which exhibit the main differences between people. Primary differences are easily recognized in the first encounter and are filters people use to view the world (Ashton 2010). Secondary differences include education, income, religion and geographical location, which are unrecognizable in the initial encounter and can change with time.
