Thesis: The impact of global warming and climate change on food production and crops.
Introduction: As humans, we have developed the capacity to modify and exploit our environment to acquire food and shelter. We have become more aware of the importance of managing and preserving the quantity and quality of our environment to sustain agriculture for food and raw materials (Dwivedi, Sahrawat, Upadhyaya, & Ortiz, 2013). Nevertheless, some of the human activities have compromised these efforts with their impact on global warming and subsequent climate change.
- Global warming: There has been an increase in the mean global temperatures since the 1850s due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the environment. The increase of these pollutants can be attributed to the use of fossil fuels that include coal, oil, and gas due to the high demand for energy across different industries. Additionally, the key mitigating factor, which is increased vegetation cover is compromised by agricultural activities that involve the release of greenhouse gases and deforestation (Rosenzweig et al., 2014).
- Climate change: Climate change is among the key significant environmental risks threatening agriculture and food security in the twenty-first century. The food production system in the modern day depends more on climate, including the types of plants grown, harvesting, and post-production activities. The impact of climate change on food and crops tend to be viewed with more concern by policymakers and researchers in areas where people depend on rain for agriculture as the main source of food and income.
- Environmental monitoring: It entails the activities of measuring various aspects of the environment in a consistence manner to gain insights into its structure and functioning. Environmental monitoring entails studying and making observations of the environment. The information gathered in environmental monitoring offers insights to determine the changes being experienced and their impact on the quality of life. Such information offers details on the changes in the environment and determining the impact of global warming and climate change in various sectors, including agriculture (Lobell et al., 2008).
- Human interactions with the environment: Increased industrial developments and agricultural activities across the world have led to an increase in the demand for raw materials, significantly increasing the production of greenhouse gases. Subsequently, global warming that influences climate change has been a key concern across different disciplines, including agriculture (Lobell, Schlenker, & Costa-Roberts, 2011).
