The Perception of Nurses in Providing Psychological Care for Burn Patients

Week: 6

Concepts and Quality Considerations with Qualitative Research
Introduction:

One key consideration in the effective implementation of qualitative research is ensuring that information collected is reliable and valid, or trustworthy.  The authors of the readings this week focus on how to effectively assess and report qualitative research and increase overall rigor.

Week 6 Assignment: Build a Qualitative Proposal

Activity Description

Taking what you have learned from the readings and the feedback given on your past assignments, present a mini proposal that includes the following:

  1. Statement of problem. Provide a clear justification with evidence on why this study is relevant to your field and worthy of doctoral-level study. Support your efforts using scholarly information published within the past 5 years to ensure relevancy. Remember the problem statement should reflect your degree type (applied or research).
  2. Purpose statement (how your study will address the problem using qualitative methodology). This statement should flow from the problem statement.
  3. Research questions (make sure there is alignment with the problem and purpose).
  4. Find 2 to 3 articles related to your topic of interest and provide an overview of the research methodology and design where you specifically discuss the elements below from each article and discuss how each applies (or does not apply to your current study):
    • A specific qualitative design,
    • The population and sample,
    • Steps for data collection and protection of human subjects,
    • Steps for the analysis of the data, and
    • Issues of trustworthiness within a qualitative framework.
  5. Based on your analysis above, what seems most applicable to your hypothetical study and why? Be sure to discuss the qualitative design, population and sample, data collection, analysis, and trustworthiness.
  6. Discussion of the inherent strengths and challenges of your hypothetical study to include any ethical considerations that might need to be addressed in the study.

Make sure to support all assertions and research choices, using the course resources as well as additional scholarly literature you have found.

Make sure to justify your steps and choices, using the course resources to help support your points.

Length: 5-7 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Learning Outcomes

2.0   Generate qualitative and quantitative research questions.

3.0   Evaluate practical and ethical issues associated with conducting research specific to different methodologies.

4.0   Develop the steps in carrying out a research study.

6.0   Analyze differences, benefits, and limits of the three primary methodologies of scientific inquiry: quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods.

7.0   Examine the foundations of a broad range of research methods and analysis techniques.

8.0   Develop a focused and dissertation-level problem statement and purpose.

9.0   Develop research questions and a design that align with the developed problem statement and purpose.

Activity #6 – Concepts and Quality Considerations with Qualitative Research

For Week 6, the assignment criteria are as follows:

Statement of problem. Provide a clear justification with evidence on why this study is relevant to your field and worthy of doctoral-level study. Support your efforts using scholarly information published within the past 5 years to ensure relevancy. Remember the problem statement should reflect your degree type (applied or research).

Purpose statement (how your study will address the problem using qualitative methodology). This statement should flow from the problem statement.

Research questions (make sure there is alignment with the problem and purpose).

Find 2 to 3 articles related to your topic of interest and provide an overview of the research methodology and design where you specifically discuss the elements below from each article and discuss how each applies (or does not apply to your current study): • A specific qualitative design, • The population and sample, • Steps for data collection and protection of human subjects, • Steps for the analysis of the data, and • Issues of trustworthiness within a qualitative framework

Based on your analysis above, what seems most applicable to your hypothetical study and why? Be sure to discuss the qualitative design, population and sample, data collection, analysis, and trustworthiness. • Discussion of the inherent strengths and challenges of your hypothetical study to include any ethical considerations that might need to be addressed in the study.

Based on this, suggest six (6) sections.  Provide descriptive headings for each, such as:

Problem Statement

Burn injuries are often traumatic experiences that can affect the working environment due to the stress and strain it can cause to the people handling patients. Burn patients are also in pain, and their bodies can be physically disfigured. Subsequently, they also face psychological challenges that can further jeopardize their health. Lack of effective management of acute pain can have detrimental effects on the negative physiological and emotional results that can escalate to chronic pains (Rex, 2012). The ER is a busy place that requires health workers to be proactive in meeting the patient’s needs. Any setbacks can compromise the life of patients or lead to conflicts and misunderstandings in the workplace. Optimal pain relief for burn patients depends on the knowledge and skills, consistent assessment, and proper documentation of the procedures (Craig, 2014). There is no doubt that the traumatic effects on nurses who are responsible for these operations in the ER can affect their performance significantly (Kornhaber, 2009). Due to improvements in emergency services and burn treatment in the last century, there has been an increase in the number of burn survivors, making it imperative for medical personnel to enhance their skills in facilitating psychosocial adjustment or them to cope with their new image in the society. Although there exist support groups that can help burn victims to adjust after hospitalization, the literature shows there are limited studies focused on the psychological care offered by caregivers during the patient’s stay in the hospital (Gonçalves, Echevarría-Guanilo, Carvalho, Miasso, & Rossi, 2011).

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to study the perceptions and experiences that exist among nurses in offering psychological care among burn victims. The research will be imperative in understanding the current measures used to ensure that patients and nurses have the psychological capabilities to handle the pain and traumatic experience. The research also intends to provide an assessment of improvements that can be used to improve standards and quality of care for the patient’s psychological needs as well as the nurses’ capabilities to handle traumatic experiences.

Research Questions

  • What is the lived traumatic experience among nurses who respond to burn patients in the ER?
  • What are the strategies employed by nurses to handle traumatic experiences when providing care for burn patients…
