Why Leadership

Reflecting on and writing a paper describing why you chose to study leadership and why you decided on this particular program to assist you in that process.

After six weeks of intensive learning and analysis of various leadership accounts, am overwhelmed with the potential I have to engage in leadership. A master’s program in leadership is the stepping stone that can help me realize this potential and foster my contribution to practice. The outcome of my journal entry is a reflective experience that has helped me to understand leadership by being involved with several informative sources that compare and contrast different elements of leadership. Suggestively, this concrete experience has influenced new perspectives about leadership and compelled me to settle on the master’s leadership program.

There is no doubt that leadership exists in any social setting throughout our existence. Nevertheless, it remains a widely discussed subject that transcend politics, business, education, communities, organizations, military, sports, nations, and even families. Arguably, leadership is embedded in the simplest form of organizations such as families. Prior to my interaction with the weekly readings, I perceived leadership to be about wielding power. Furthermore, I did not understand the difference between leadership and management. It has come to dawn on me that leadership is increasingly becoming more about the ability to steer a team or an organization towards achieving a common goal. This inclination also appreciates that there are a different kinds of leaders. There are various styles of enabling followers to meet the organizational goals. While some people give instructions on how activities should be carried out, there are others who prefer to engage with their subordinates in the actual undertakings. Decision making and fostering change are critical roles in leadership. Different people approach these roles from different perspectives. Autocratic leaders dictate what should be done, while transformative leaders engage other stakeholders in facilitating a consensus that acknowledges the interests of other…
